Where Do You Stand? – Knowing and Appreciating the Niche

Yesterday, someone caught me off-guard. He asked me to think seriously about my special place professionally. During our, initially frustrating, conversation my friend kept imploring me not to reference anyone else or consider their work as an example of where I stood professionally. I have to admit, it was hard not to consider others as I was challenged to think of myself.

So I blocked him out too. In a good way. I blocked out his voice, even my own and waited for it to hit me like a ton of bricks. And it did hit me.

I figured out where I stood as a PR consultant and publicist. Thank God for this man’s foresight and his kindness to make me think more clearly about my own special mission and purpose. Yesterday’s exercise inspired my entire work day and even my personal night.

Perspective is liberating. Self-awareness even more so.

  • I remembered what I’m extremely good at
  • I was reminded that there are places and people I will not associate with because of my niche or standing
  • I became more focused in my efforts

This one exercise explained successes and failures; brilliant decisions and dumb as rocks choices; criticism and support I’ve received, and it explained every opportunity to come my way or not come my way.
