EDITORIAL NEWS

O, THE OPRAH MAGAZINE* has a new editor-in-chief. Susan Reed is leaving, less than a year after taking on the job “to pursue other opportunities.” Susan Casey has been named to succeed Reed on July 20. She comes from Time Inc, where, among other positions, she served as editor of the now ceased SPORTS ILLUSTRATED WOMEN*. Earlier in her career, she was creative director of OUTSIDE* magazine. The 9-year old O shot to the top from the start but has faltered lately, missing rate base twice and with newsstand sales down 25% in the second half of 2008…
Johnson Publishing (EBONY*, JET*) is in deep financial trouble and are asking freelancers to write for free. Among other problems, the company has been hit with contractors’ liens claiming the company failed to pay for work worth nearly $500,000 and mortgaged its South Michigan Avenue headquarters building and parking garage to its printer, RR Donnelley. Loan documents say the deal secured previous debts to Donnelley totaling $12.7 million. Good article at http://bit.ly/3QTOx…
VAIN is scheduled to launch this fall as a women’s lifestyle quarterly in select markets, including New York, Los Angeles, Miami, Chicago, Houston, Dallas, Atlanta, Charlotte and Raleigh, NC. Editor-in-chief Rachelle Gauthier, rachelle@vainmag.com, is creating the magazine to “capture the essence and core of all women, with a direct focus on self.” It will cover everyday life issues, trends, fashion, beauty, cars, culture, politics, financial advice, food, exercise, music and celebrities while paying attention to all types of women. The website is already available at http://www.vainmag.com…
SATURDAY EVENING POST, a centuries-old publication that helped make illustrator Norman Rockwell a household name and showcased some of America’s greatest writers, is turning back time to better reflect contemporary American society with its July/August 2009 issue. “We are focusing on America — past, present, and future,” said Joan SerVaas, the magazine’s publisher. “As Americans face uncertain times, people are looking for enjoyment in simple things and finding comfort from traditional values. For three centuries, The Saturday Evening Post has chronicled the rich history and the cultural evolution of American life.” The redesign will broaden its focus to become a general interest magazine again and tell the story of American life through in-depth features, fiction, and art. It will include writing of popular radio and television commentator Charles Osgood, authors Ray Bradbury and John Hemingway, and other award-winning journalists. Likewise, the magazine that discovered Norman Rockwell is searching for America’s next great artists and fiction writers to continue its legacy of chronicling the story of American life. In addition to Osgood’s commentary, regular topics include travel, food, finance, health, fiction, and a focus on features that explore America – past, present and future. Maureen Mercho, CEO for the Post, said ad sales had dropped because of the recession, prompting the magazine to look for ways to broaden its base. Post officials hope that the magazine can boost circulation to 500,000 in the coming years…
