lil-wayne-phelpsI wish I were a betting woman, because I’d be rich today. A few months ago, when Olympian Mike Phelps said he listened to Lil’ Wayne before competitions, I predicted that little surburban boys and girls would go out and buy Lil’ Wayne CDs and downloads would increase. I also suggested to a colleague that Lil’ Wayne start doing mainstream interviews and appear on mainstream TV, she laughed and said he wouldn’t do it.

He did it.

Much to the chagrin of colleagues who thought I’d missed the mark with that suggestion, I maintained that crossing over would be a brilliant career move for Lil’ Wayne. I’ve read his interviews and know he’s not only smart but he is also incredibly charismatic. Moreover, he is quirky and eccentric enough to get a crossover pass. His appearance on ABC’s The View on Friday, April 24 proved me right. I love being right.

Lil’ Wayne had the hosts (Whoopi Goldberg, Joy Behar, Sherri Shepherd and Elizabeth Hasselbeck) and the audience eating out of his tatooed hands. He was engaging, funny, articulate and forthright about everything from his diamond-encrusted teeth to his marijuana use. I half expected Whoopi to go off on him about his lyrics and video images glorifying illegal drug activity and the female anatomy. She was incredibly restrained.  My favorite Lil’ Wayne on The View moment came while he was performing and asked the audience to put their hands up and they did.

Here is the segment:
